A stunning image of the moon has been taken by India's ground-breaking Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft from lunar orbit. Presently, Chandrayaan-2 has completed the second lunar orbit. While the orbiter will stay in space, the lander is meant to carry the rover down to the lunar surface for an up-close look at the Moon.
Chandrayaan-2 will soon create history by landing on Moon on September 7, a moment everyone in the country is waiting for with bated breath.
As it does so, the spacecraft is capturing stunning images of the moon's pitted surface, including a set taken on August 23 by the vehicle's Terrain Mapping Camera 2. Chandrayaan 2 departed from Earth's orbit and moved towards the Moon on August 14. "Two top scoring students of classes eight 8 to 10 from each state and Union territory will be invited to ISRO's Bangalore centre to watch the landing of Chandrayaan-2 on the moon live along with the Prime Minister", a senior HRD official said here Monday.

India's Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft has beamed back fresh images of the cratered surface of the Moon just weeks from when the craft is due to touch down on the unexplored south pole of Earth's natural satellite.
It is named after Prof Sisir Kumar Mitra, who was an Indian physicist and Padma Bhushan recipient known for his pioneering work in the field of ionosphere and radiophysics.It is a 71 km dia crater at 22.4°N and 163.1°W (shown in the inset).
The spacecraft is scheduled to enter its final circular orbit around the moon on 1 September.
