Far from a certainty to play the ODIs, Kimmince decimated the England lower-order on Thursday to finish with figures of 5-26 after Tammy Beaumont's century threatened to leave an imposing chase at Grace Road.

"It is a frustrating one from our perspective", said skipper Heather Knight. They must make themselves more prepare for this series. "I'm proud of the way the girls fought but we need to be smarter with the bat". Although she said afterwards she "never felt in", Beaumont managed to go at nearly a run a ball while scoring more than half of England's runs; the only one of her team-mates to come close to matching her fluency was Danni Wyatt, who made 25 off 25 balls. But Perry made the most of a lucky break with a stumping decision going in her favour by first building a 53-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Rachael Haynes (30).

The situation had looked promising when Beaumont's stunning innings, which included 12 boundaries, ensured the scoreboard kept ticking for England despite her team-mates' inability to contribute much at the other end. They had put England on course for what seemed like a score in the region of 250, but Wyatt was well caught by Alyssa Healy standing up to Megan Schutt and Beaumont fell in the following over, dragging on attempting a reverse-swat through the off side.

Beaumont lamented the failure of her and teammates to take advantage of a good position from which they lost the final five wickets for 30 runs.

Despite Kimmince's heroics, Australia were far from certain of victory with 60 runs required and four wickets remaining when Ellyse Perry, after a classy 62, chased a wide long-hop from Anya Shrubsole (3-47) and edged behind.

Shrubsole claimed three wickets overall but it was not enough as Mooney steered Australia home with four overs to spare.
