Disney's Live-Action 'Little Mermaid' Casts Halle Bailey As Ariel

Variety reports R&B singer Halle Bailey has been cast to play Ariel in the reimagining of the classic animated film.

Earlier this week, ET learned that Melissa McCarthy was in early talks to play Ursula in the film, and The Hollywood Reporter also reported that Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina are in talks for the roles of Flounder and Scuttle, respectively.

Daughter of King Triton of Atlantica, the rebellious Ariel sets out to be a part of the human world and eventually marries a human, Prince Eric, whom she rescued from a shipwreck. Marshall has also made his last three films at Disney, including Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Into the Woods, and the Poppins sequel.

The Little Mermaid remake is directed by Rob Marshall and produced by Marshall, John DeLuca, Marc Platt and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Jessica Virtue and Allison Erlikhman are overseeing for the studio. This new adaptation will feature songs from the original that were written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, as well as some new tunes, with Menken handling the music and Miranda handling the lyrics. The 19-year-old singer and actress now stars on Freeform's grown-ish as Sky Forster, but is best known for performing with her younger sister Chloe in their R&B duo Chloe x Halle. The duo are signed to Beyoncé's record label Parkwood Entertainment and have opened for the mega star on her "Lemonade" tour.
