11 dead, 6 injured in shooting in Va. Beach; suspect dead

At least 12 people were killed and six others were injured as a longtime municipal employee opened fire inside a public works building in the U.S. city of Virginia Beach on Friday.

Police Chief James Cervera said Friday that a shooter opened fire and shot "indiscriminately" at workers inside an operations building in the Virginia Beach Municipal Building Friday afternoon.

Virginia Beach Police Chief Jim Cervera has told a press conference the suspect was a "current employee" and that his motive for the "violent, violent act" was unknown when he stormed the building at 4pm local time.

She said she texted her mum, telling her that there was an active shooter in the building and she and others were waiting for police.

Cervera said exchanges of fire involving police officers typically involve minimal rounds fired.

The tragedy is now being labeled the deadliest shooting in the United States this year.

According to CNN, the Virginia Beach Police Department had scheduled a free community workshop for Saturday morning on what to do during mass shootings.

Shortly after 4 p.m. on Friday, the shooter entered Building No. 2 of the Municipal Center, which houses Public Works and other city agencies.

"This is a tragic day for Virginia Beach and our entire Commonwealth", Virginia governor Ralph Northam said on Twitter.

Sen. Mark R. Warner, Virginia Democrat, also issued a statement Friday evening: "I am horrified by what has happened today in Virginia Beach".

The FBI is providing assistance to local authorities.

The shooting took place is in a suburban complex located miles away from the high-rise hotels along the beach and the downtown business area.

The injured officer's life was saved when a bullet struck his vest, Chief Cervera told reporters.
