Barr to be a no-show for House hearing, stepping up tensions

U.S. Attorney General William Barr can be expected to face questions Wednesday from members of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee about the nature and scope of his communication with Robert Mueller III, the special counsel who was appointed to lead the Russian Federation investigation. Democrats on the panel contended that Barr was protecting Trump after he assessed Mueller's report on his own in the early memo and declared there wasn't enough evidence that the president had committed obstruction of justice.

Golden also had not yet watched Barr's testimony, but in a statement Wednesday the state's junior congressman said Americans should be relieved the Mueller report found no evidence of direct coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. "Nobody is above the law".

The House Judiciary Committee voted yesterday to allow for an extra hour in their scheduled firing squad "hearing" with Attorney General Bill Barr.

He dismissed the idea that Barr would be held in contempt of Congress for no-showing the hearing, explaining that Barr offered to testify voluntarily, rather than being forced to appear via subpoena.

"The report suggests one impact is that we have to find some other reason why the president would obstruct the investigation, but there's another impact", Barr said. "He's the people lawyer", Biden said of Barr. The Justice Department has argued it made most of the report available publicly, and that a dozen congressional leaders can read a less-redacted report with only grand jury material removed.

Claire McCaskill, a former Democratic Senator from Missouri who was appearing as a guest on the MSNBC show, shared her perspective.

Trump criticized Democrats for demanding too much of Barr, telling Fox Business Network's Trish Regan Wednesday night that "they want to treat him differently than they have anybody else".

Under questioning by the Senate committee, Barr described the letter as "Snitty" and that because of that tone, he thought it was likely written by Mueller's staff not Mueller.

As Barr refused to testify, Democrats sought to speak to Mueller himself. "The level of disregard, even contempt of the Congress's role was unmistakable", Clinton said.

Trump was asked about Barr's comments during an Oval Office meeting Thursday with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

"What I just saw from the Attorney General is unacceptable". What would the reaction be if Barr investigated and found the evidence less compelling than the Mueller report's framing?

"He should resign - and based on the actual facts in the Mueller report, Congress should begin impeachment proceedings against the President". When Trump's critics inflate details of the report to create wild conspiracy theories completely unsupported by the facts, they are doing an equally significant disservice to the dialogue surrounding the president and what he may have done or not done with regard to Russian Federation and the subsequent investigation. Also under scrutiny was Barr's summary of the Mueller report, which Mueller had said in a letter did not adequately reflect his results.
