"We remind customers that loadshedding stage 4 is no cause for alarm as the system is being effectively controlled in order to prevent a total collapse of the system or a national blackout", said Eskom in a statement.

Eskom said in the response that the scheduled loadshedding allows critical loads such as hospitals and deep level mines to be managed and allow customs, in general, to know when they will be shed. These stages shed 5000MW and 6000MW respectively, according to the report.

The country at large has been subjected to various stages of load shedding since the later months of 2018, and the current schedule switches between Stage 2 and 4.

Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan briefs the media on 19 March 2019.

The Ministry of Public Enterprises, which oversees Eskom, said in a statement late on Sunday that Eskom would be assisted to fast-track the procurement of essential goods and services required to rehabilitate and fix generating units at local power stations. "At this point in time we are still getting a better grasp of the technical problems and other problems that Eskom power stations are confronting", said Gordhan.

Pumped storage dams are low. This is due to a shortage of capacity, Eskom added.

There is no power from Mozambique's Cahora-Bassa hydroelectric generation station.

Three generator units are running, but with boiler tube leaks which place them at risk.

Many of Eskom's coal-fired power plants are old and unplanned breakdowns have increased after the company fell behind on maintenance as its financial situation worsened.
