Picking out Close in the audience, Colman said: "You've been my idol for so long and this is not how I wanted it to be".

Colman also praised her co-stars, calling Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz "the two loveliest women in the world to fall in love with". "The fact that I'm celebrating him and this story with you tonight is proof that we're longing for stories like this", said Malek on stage.

The actress won the Oscars trophy for Best Actress for her performance as the eccentric, queer Queen Anne in "The Favourite".

She went on thank her family and joked she hoped her children were watching as "this isn't going to happen again".
