Manafort accused of sharing polling data with Russian allegedly linked to Kremlin

Manafort's lawyers say he's suffering from anxiety and depression, lacks contact with his family, and had little time to prepare for hours-long questioning by the investigators.

Kilimnik is a veteran of the Russian army whom Mueller accused of having ties to Russian intelligence agencies. Prosecutors say Manafort acknowledged the meeting only after being told that they were in the same city on the same day.

They contended the 69-year-old Manafort, facing years in prison, had breached the cooperation agreement that was reached when he pleaded guilty to cheating US tax authorities, violating federal lobbying laws and obstructing justice in connection with his long-time lobbying efforts for deposed Ukrainian leader Viktor Yanukovych in the years before he worked on Trump's campaign.

The documents reveal that Manafort lied about sharing polling data for the 2016 presidential election with Kilimnik, and about meeting with the Russian in Madrid, during the campaign.

A longtime Republican operative and lobbyist who had worked for prominent Republicans, including Bob Dole, Manafort joined the Trump campaign in March 2016.

"These circumstances weighed heavily on Mr Manafort's state of mind and on his memory as he was questioned at length", the lawyers wrote.
They said Manafort was unclear on how the payment was recorded by his accountant.

The filing also says Manafort has been accused of lying to investigators by saying that he did not discuss a Ukrainian peace plan with Kilimnik.

In that span, he led Miami to a 23-25 record including a playoff appearance in 2016. "It's not about winning one year and then falling back", Grier said.

The proposal would involve Russia pulling forces from eastern Ukraine and allow Ukrainian voters decide whether Crimea should be leased to Russia 50 or 100 years, along with lifting sanctions on Russia. This does not constitute outreach by Mr. Manafort to the President.

"It is not surprising at all that Mr Manafort was unable to recall specific details prior to having his recollection refreshed", Manafort's team wrote.

Mueller said in a court filing last month that Manafort broke his plea deal by lying about his contacts with Russian officials and the White House while he was in prison.

The filing did not indicate whether the polling information involved internal campaign data or when exactly it was provided.

In another faultily redacted portion, Manafort's lawyers disclosed an unnamed third party texted Manafort last May asking to use his name as a point of introduction if the person met with President Donald Trump, The Hill reported.

In addition to winning the case against Manafort, Mueller and other federal prosecutors have secured guilty pleas for various offenses from Trump's first national security advisor, Michael Flynn, former campaign aide Rick Gates, foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos and Trump's personal attorney, Michael Cohen, among others.

Defence lawyers say they don't want a separate hearing before a judge on the lying allegations, but will address them instead during the sentencing process.
