WWE wrestling superstar pulls out of Saudi event

The build towards Crown Jewel has been a controversial and criticised one, given the global political situation regarding the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Hogan's return follows the confirmation this week that Superstars John Cena and Daniel Bryan will not be heading to the Middle Eastern country for the much criticised grapple fest this Friday. Daniel Bryan injured his knee on a suicide dive, which AJ Styles went on to attack throughout the match.

John Cena and Daniel Bryan have both been quietly written out of the "Crown Jewel" contest in Riyadh, after they reportedly refused to make the trip in light of the murder of Saudi journalist and US resident Jamal Khashoggi earlier this month. SmackDown Live is represented by Jeff Hardy vs The Miz and Rey Mysterio vs Randy Orton. Styles later approached Paige, Smackdown Live's general manager, and demanded to face Joe at "Crown Jewel" for the WWE championship, effectively writing Bryan out of Friday's show. "Regardless of what is going on in my universe, I was not going to miss this event for anything in the world". He appeared in WWE's "Greatest Royal Rumble" earlier this year in Saudi Arabia, defeating Triple H in the show's opening match.

He has started all eight games for the 3-5 Broncos this season, recording 36 receptions for 402 yards and three touchdowns. He only played 18 offensive snaps in each of his first two games with New England.

Crown Jewel, which is set to take place at Riyadh's King Saud University Stadium, is also scheduled to feature several of the company's other high-profile legends.

No female wrestlers are allowed to participate at the Saudi event.
