California shooting: Gunman revealed as US Marine Corps veteran Ian David Long

The Los Angeles Rams and coach Sean McVay offered their condolences and support to the victims, families and community affected by the mass shooting Wednesday night at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks that killed 12 people.

Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus, who was killed Wednesday in the deadly shooting at a country music bar in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

At a press conference, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said Helus called his wife and said he had a call to handle, and told her he loved her before running into the incident at the bar.

Civilians and other deputies pulled Sergeant Helus from the bar and he was taken to Los Robles hospital, where he died an hour later. The sheriff said Sgt. Helus undoubtedly saved lives by going in to confront the gunman.

Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said on Thursday that Long was armed with a Glock 21, a.45-caliber handgun created to hold 10 rounds plus one in the chamber.

People "dog-piled on top of each other" trying to hide in silence, she said.

On Wednesday night, students gathered for college country night between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m., according to the bar's website.

Dean said police had previous run-ins with Long, including a call to his home where he was acting irrationally. Others jumped over chairs and broke windows to get out.

Twelve people were killed, including Helus.

The killer was identified as Ian David Long, a 28-year-old veteran who authorities said had an episode of erratic behavior last spring that was thought to be post-traumatic stress disorder because of his military background.

The father of one patron told CBS L.A. his daughter told him the gunman "knew what he was doing" and came in "with a objective". The injured included a deputy, Kuredjian said.

Holden Harrah told CNN the gunman opened fire within seconds.

Officials said that shots were still being fired when the first officers arrived at the scene.

Coffman said he bonded with Cody over outdoor activities - he coached his son in baseball starting from age 3 and the two often went fishing together.

"I saw somebody on the floor as I was running to the front door to get out", he said.
