They remain three points adrift of the Premier League's top four but Emery appears to have injected energy into a team that was stagnating under Wenger.

Former PSG coach Emery has enjoyed an encouraging first few months as Wenger's successor, with Arsenal now unbeaten in 16 matches and buoyed by impressive performances against Liverpool, Fulham and Leicester.

Emery arrived at the Emirates Stadium with the club at a low ebb.

"With Arsene, joy came from attacking, with players of good standing".

"But over time, only technical quality and offensive freedom were taken care of, losing the defensive structure".

"In terms of the difficulty of the teams, it's not just the top teams but all of the teams in the league are very hard because they all have good players and I think that's what makes the Premier League as far as I know the most competitive league around".

Emery also said the players had a long way to go, despite the good start, and any information Wenger had given him wasn't used, adding, "I met once with him, and little else". The Arsenal was in decline.

The former PSG boss was asked if he spoke to Wenger prior to taking the job and said: "Not about the team". Our objective in terms of the table is to finish in the top four.

"At the same time, every competition where there's a title up for grabs is important and that counts for the two domestic cup competitions as well".

"We need to give the team another push", Emery said.

"We came to an Arsenal that hadn't beaten any of the top six and, while we still haven't done so yet, they also struggled to win away from home at all and we have already improved in that area", Emery said.

Arsenal travel to sixth-placed Bournemouth on Sunday as Premier League action resumes, with the Gunners looking to extend their unbeaten run by yet another game. "Arsenal must be big, not let us take advantage of the four above and not let the bottom approach".
