Toney was shot at from inside the suspect vehicle as soon as he approached the auto in a parking lot at a middle school.

Authorities say two teen-aged suspects from Snellville, including one still being sought by police, were both in a vehicle during a shooting that left one George police officer dead. He is considered armed and unsafe, police said.

Tafahree Maynard, 18, should be considered armed and risky after taking the life of Gwinnett County Police Officer Antwan Toney, authorities say.

Gwinnett County Police Chief Butch Ayers said in a subsequent press conference that investigators are reviewing body camera footage of the shooting, but did not specify whose body camera footage he was referring to.

The suspect's vehicle sped away and crashed not too far from the scene. The officers had returned fire and it was unclear whether anyone in the vehicle was wounded or whether the auto simply crashed while fleeing, Smith said. Maynard is facing charges of aggravated assault and felony murder while Pretlow has been charged with aggravated assault.

According to police, Pretlow drove the vehicle from the scene following the shooting, crashed a short distance away and fled along with other occupants.

The suspects fired through the vehicle's window before driving off, police say.

Toney, along with other officers, arrived at an area near Shiloh Middle School about 2:30 p.m.in response to a report of "a suspicious vehicle", police said.

A Georgia police officer has been fatally shot while responding to a suspicious vehicle parked near a middle school.

Both suspects are from Snellville. An officer searching the area later encountered Pretlow around 3 p.m. Pretlow pointed a gun at the officer, who fired shots, according to police.

WSB-TV reporter Rikki Klaus tweeted Saturday night that authorities had surrounded a nearby residence and were waiting for a search warrant. A helicopter was also seeing flying above the vicinity of the middle school.

It was not immediately clear where Toney was struck, but he succumbed to his injuries - just six days from his three-year mark with the department, Smith said.

Fox4KC reports "there were as many as four people inside the auto".
