Widespread damage after tornado hits Ontario and Quebec

The hospital said two patients were in critical condition, one had serious injuries, and the others were listed as either stable or in fair condition.

Their rural Ottawa neighbourhood of Dunrobin was one of the worst hit areas as twin tornadoes tore through Ottawa and across the Ottawa River to Gatineau, Que., on Friday.

Meanwhile, electricity company HydroQuebec reported over 130,000 customers were without power in the Ottawa area Friday evening.

"We're here to assure everyone in the region that's been affected that we'll spare no expense, we'll do whatever it takes to make sure we get people back on their feet", Mr. Ford said as he travelled through the community of Dunrobin, in the west end of the city, with Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson.

Residents of the Ottawa region are facing widespread power outages and school closures after two tornadoes struck on Friday.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also tweeted Saturday day that he'd spoken with the mayors of Ottawa and Gatineau to offer federal assistance. As the skies grew ominously dark, they heard what sounded like a huge truck engine revving in their backyard, and then their ears popped with the change in air pressure.

With a few minor cuts, the pair took shelter as the intense winds blew overhead.

The roof was sheared off, the second storey of the edifice was open to the sky.

Anthony Di Monte, general manager of the City of Ottawa's Emergency and Protective Service, said that more than 400 traffic lights continue to be out. A lot of people have been stepping up to help storm victims with a hot meal, an outlet to charge their phone or a shower. More than 3,000 people were fed hot meals on Saturday at a community centre in the suburb or Barrhaven.

He says the worst is over for the region, but tornado warnings are still in effect in the Ontario communities of Prescott and Russell.

Damage from the storm is major - roofs have been torn off homes and cars were overturned on Highway 50 - and the cleanup was just beginning on Saturday morning.

Hydro Ottawa crews are working to restore power to affected areas, involving clearing trees, debris and fallen wires.
