Tiger Woods storms into joint-lead at the Tour Championship

Making his first competitive start as world No 1, Rose admitted he was frustrated at being only two under par with just two holes remaining after he offset four birdies - including three in a row around the turn - with a pair of three-putt bogeys.

Speaking about his expectations this season after reaching the Tour Championship, Tiger Woods said: "I think the season itself has been awesome". Woods nailed an eagle putt from just under 30 feet on the final hole to finish his round at five-under.

"I hit so many quality shots all day, whether it was tee-to-green or putts", Woods said.

"I'm really happy with my round today, and I think I played fantastically, if I'm honest", said Rose afterwards. "I felt in control".

Five-time BMW victor Woods was solid from tee to green, hitting 11 of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in regulation.

Woods is still in the mix despite Xander Schauffele (64) surging into the outright lead at 13 under at the elite 70-man event - the penultimate leg of the $US67 million ($A93 million) FedEx Cup playoffs.

"Oh, definitely", Fowler said, when asked if he relished the prospect of going off with Woods at 2 p.m., the last twosome, Friday. They continued at the Medalist once Woods was hitting full shots, and the process seems to have demystified everything for Fowler. "I've had the opportunity before, and I definitely am in a lot better position now than I was in the early part of my career". The world number nine birdied eight and then played the 11th to 18th holes in three under.

"I think I missed one fairway, which the ball was in the first cut, and I think I hit every green from there on in".

Woods and Fowler head a star-studded leaderboard that includes Rory McIlroy (67), Justin Thomas (67) and world No. 1 Justin Rose (66), while Fedex Cup leader Bryson DeChambeau opened the door for all the players to swoop on the big prize pool with an opening 71 that left him in the bottom portion of the field.

The FedEx Cup kicks in on Thursday afternoon.
