On Saturday morning, The Athletic's Shams Charania reported that the Lakers and veteran forward Luol Deng are in the process of finalizing a buyout and that the team would use the waive-and-stretch provision. "We made this move to further our future salary cap and roster flexibility, as we continue to build this Lakers team according to our current overall vision". The Lakers will also get significant extra cap space for next summer, via the waive-and-stretch provision.
Deng was owed $36.8 million over the next two seasons.
Deng's departure and contract stretch should sharply increase the Lakers' available cap room by roughly $12 million for next summer, when they hope to add a second superstar on a maximum contract to join LeBron James.

He has career averages of 15.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 steals over 880 National Basketball Association games.
