Florence expected to become hurricane, heading to southeast US

Storm surge and hurricane watches may be issued Tuesday morning for portions of southeastern U.S. states, the NHC said. The storm was located roughly 1,170 miles east-southeast of the Cape Fear region, and remained a risky Category 4 storm.

As of noon EDT, Florence was centered about 575 miles (925 kilometers) south-southeast of Bermuda, moving west at 13 mph (20 kph).

Dare County officials ordered everyone to leave Hatteras Island on Monday.
