Final farewell to Aretha Franklin

The star gave her final performance last November at a gala in NY held in aid of the Elton John Aids Foundation. She gave us pride, and she gave us a regal bar to reach.

Her coffin is to be entombed on Friday in Detroit's Woodlawn Cemetery near the remains of her father; her brother, Cecil Franklin; and her sisters, Carolyn and Erma Franklin.

The soul music may have startled tourists expecting British pomp and ceremony Friday from the Welsh Guards, who were wearing traditional red military jackets topped by high bearskin hats.

Numerous tributes were musical.

The service, a celebration of the life and legacy of one of the U.S. music icon, is expected to last six hours at the Greater Grace Temple in her MI hometown.

On the show, Grande recounted her memories of meeting Franklin, saying, "I met her a few times". When the diva's family arrived, the song was "You Are The Source of My Strength".

Among the singers and speakers, former United States president Bill Clinton, 72, took to the stage and paid tribute to Aretha in a moving speech. Her contribution was a popular hymn called "I'll Fly Away".

Outside, dozens of pink Cadillac owners worked together to pay their respects, lining the road ahead of Franklin's funeral.

Inside the chapel, Bill and Hillary Clinton greeted other mourners including Jesse Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg and musician Smokey Robinson. That included being the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as well as receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Kennedy Center Honors, the National Medal of Arts and 18 Grammys.

Franklin's body was dressed in a golden sequined outfit.

Numerous floral arrangements from celebrities including Sam Moore, Mariah Carey, Barbra Streisand and the family of Otis Redding were set up in a hallwayoutside the sanctuary. "I know the world lost the 'Queen, ' but her sons lost their mother, her nieces and nephews lost their aunt. Even when we would fuss".

Tomorrow, Aretha will be laid to rest in a private funeral, where more will perform tributes.

The service will reflect Franklin's strong gospel roots. The Pink Cadillacs outside refer to a Franklin hit from the 1980s, "Freeway of Love".

CNN, MSNBC and Fox News will televise Aretha Franklin's homegoing service.
