T-Mobile is alerting its customers about a security breach that could have impacted some of its customers' personal information. In 2015, the wireless carrier said the personal records of 15 million people were compromised through a breach at Experian, which processed the company's credit applications.

T-Mobile disclosed the breach today, explaining that while it didn't involve financial details or Social Security numbers, some customer data was left exposed to the hackers.

The incident occurred on the 20th of August, and the company's cybersecurity experts managed to shut down the attack nearly immediately after detection.

The announcement states that financial information and social security numbers were not among the data that could have been accessed, and passwords were also safe from the breach.

T-Mobile began notifying customers of the intrusion this week and encouraged them to contact customer service with any concerns. "We truly regret that this incident occurred and are so sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you", T-Mobile said.

"Hackers stole customer names, ZIP codes, phone numbers, email addresses, account numbers and account types". Affected customers were being notified. It is unclear whether the exposed data was actually stolen by the hackers.

A T-Mobile spokesperson told the tech news website Motherboard that about 3 percent of its customers may have been affected.
