He had spent more than three decades in the Senate, looming large in debates over war and peace and the moral direction of the nation.

As a candidate, Trump in 2016 claimed the decorated McCain is only considered a war hero because he had been captured.

"He's a decent, family man, citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues", McCain said to a woman during a campaign event in 2008 who said she believes Obama is "Arab".

The office of Barack and Michelle Obama also released a statement on the passing of the U.S. veteran. Additionally, his courage, perseverance and ability to overcome adversity, in every facet of his life, will continue to inspire us all. John McCain was one of them. One of his rescuers said many years later that McCain was well treated after being pulled from the lake by villagers. "Senator McCain was a great American hero and patriot who dedicated his life and career to public service".

That earned him the ire of Trump, who regularly blamed McCain for his failure to reform Obama-era health care laws and refused to say his name when signing the eponymous "John S. McCain National Defense Authorisation Act". "At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years", his office said in a statement. "May their memories of this great man sustain them".

McCain had been locked in a war of words with Trump dating back to 2015 and specified months ago that he did not want the president to attend his funeral. "God bless John McCain". "I am able to celebrate a wonderful life and I will be grateful for additional time that I have", the senator said at the time. McCain was elected to the U.S. Senate from Arizona six times. "We're getting nothing done", he said.

A woman who answered the phone at Goldberg's office on 17 August said the lawyer would not be available to discuss this article. As he was driven home, according to his claim, he began to feel "extremely confused, mortified, and disgusted".

Former Vice President Joe Biden - whose son, Beau, died of the same cancer as McCain - also released a statement, writing, "John McCain was many things - a proud graduate of the Naval Academy, a Senate colleague, a political opponent". Thank you for all your continued support and prayers. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Cindy, and all the McCain family during this time".

From there, he ran for Congress, representing Arizona - first in the house and then in the Senate. He was defeated by Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

President Barack Obama, who ran against McCain for the presidency in 2008, said that Americans remain in the former senator's debt because of all that he did for the country. With his good-natured sales pitches for things like "McCain's Fine Gold" (featuring a cameo from Cindy McCain) and self-deprecating humor ("I'm a true maverick - a Republican without money"), the Senator held his own with comedy veteran Fey and generated plenty of laughs himself.

A dark period for McCain came as one of the "Keating Five " group of senators accused of improperly intervening with federal regulators to help political contributor and bank executive Charles Keating, whose Lincoln Savings and Loan failed in 1989 at a cost to taxpayers of US$3.4 billion (S$4.64 billion).

McCain's wife, Cindy, said in a tweet on Saturday that the McCain family was "overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from around the world" after Friday's announcement.
