Serena Williams Upset in Wimbledon Final

Williams and her then-fiancé, Alexis Ohanian, welcomed their first-born daughter in September 2017.

Bremen-born Kerber said her first experiences of Wimbledon were watching seven-times champion Graf. "I think that helps me also to being a little bit relaxed today".

Once you do that, you've got a chance, but she wins points so quickly: serve and next shot or else just a straight return victor.

'Today she played in the final at Wimbledon.

Kerber made only five unforced errors the entire match, 19 fewer than Williams. It would be her last tournament for more than a year, in part because of a series of medical procedures that followed a hard childbirth.

Seven-times champion Williams had been bidding to claim a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam crown but made too many errors as Kerber ran out a comfortable victor in the final.

After Williams held serve, all eyes were on Kerber, including those of British royalty.

After the trophy presentation and mutual praise for each other from Kerber and Williams, the new Wimbledon champion spoke with ESPN's Tom Rinaldi. "Also, with the experience she has, she is taking more experience into those matches to stay mentally calm".

"She's just getting started".

Kerber addressed Williams during the on-court interviews, saying: "You're such an inspiration for everybody, for all of us".

Now she's dropped another. But it's weird, I set my schedule so I have time. There are no holes.

The left-hander scurried along the baseline, this way and that, using a combination of quickness and anticipation to track down what often appeared to be winners for Williams but were not enough to end a point.

Kerber is much more than a defender.

The left-hander struggled to deal with the added focus past year, though, when she failed to win a title and slid from number one to 21 in the rankings. "I look forward to continuing to be back out here and do what I do best".

"I entered Wimbledon just wanting to win some matches".

Kerber was broken only once.

The opening set saw Kerber break in the opening game, and despite losing that break, she would break back consecutively for 4-3 and 6-3 to take the set, all while locking her down serve.

"I spoke with my grandparents after the match, straight after, because I knew that they support me at home in front of the TV", Kerber said.

Williams had fought back from a set down in the quarter-finals against Camila Giorgi, but the fighting spirit was clearly spent this time.

'I'm sure you will have your next grand slam title'.

While the Middleton's have been holding down the fort in the royal box, the Wimbledon crowd will be treated to the real deal on Saturday when the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex attend the women's grand final together for their first engagement together without their husbands.

Williams was asked what she'll tell her daughter, Olympia, about this tournament and this day.

"Well, I think it was a happy story - I'll probably change the ending", Williams replied dryly. First my C-section wound popped open due to the intense coughing I endured as a result of the embolism.
