Game of Thrones racks up 22 Emmy nominations

"It's been another record-breaking year with more than 9,100 entries in 122 unique categories for the initial nomination round of voting", Television Academy Chairman and CEO Hayma Washington said in a statement. Netflix racked up 112 nods while HBO earned 108. And with the $8 billion that chief content officer Ted Sarandos expects to throw at original programming this year, next year's Emmy noms may look rather similar.

As far as other networks and platforms, NBC received the third most nominations this year, 78, followed by FX Networks (50), CBS (34), ABC (31), Hulu (27), and Amazon (22).

Some of music's biggest names including Donald Glover, John Legend, and Bruno Mars are among the nominees for the 70th annual Primetime Emmy Awards.

Although season seven of Game of Thrones aired in summer 2017, due to the Emmys' eligibility cutoff, the HBO drama had to wait until this year to submit anything for consideration. These shows and performances absolutely deserved a little recognition.

Among them were Will Carr and Dale Goulding, who made the decision to book flights last Thursday before progress was guaranteed. In 2002, 2006 and 2014 they were eliminated in the group stages, and they failed to qualify for the 2010 tournament.

Alison Brie was also a notable oversight for her standout work in "GLOW", the Netflix period female-wrestling comedy, as was "Modern Family", although after its glittering streak of Emmy nominations, it's hard to fault anyone for concluding the ABC sitcom's best days are behind it, especially with so many worthy newcomers to accommodate.

While that rang true to a degree, "The Looming Tower" did not break into the limited series race.

As always, the Emmys will be second-guessed and analyzed, looking for snubs and surprises. The two drama series picked up 13 and 12 nods respectively, and both were recognized in the coveted top drama category.
