A watchdog group and a former special counsel to President Barack Obama are seeking an ethics review of Rep. Jim Jordan even as former colleagues back his statements that he didn't know about sexual abuse of wrestlers while coaching at Ohio State University.
His repeated denial, which included specific attacks on the characters and motivations of the men sharing their stories, came a day after US President Donald Trump spoke out in Jordan's defense, telling reporters on Air Force One that he was an "outstanding man" and that "I believe him".
Multiple members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus say they are "uncomfortable" with the scrutiny growing around whether Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of OH turned a blind eye to alleged abuse, but those conservatives are taking a "wait and see" approach for the time being, according to one source Monday who is familiar with their thinking. "It was there. He knew about it because it was an everyday occurrence", according to the Washington Post.
But on Monday, six former Ohio State wrestling coaches defended Jordan in a joint statement that said none of them was aware of abuse of wrestlers.
"I don't think that we look at this kind of thing with the same lens as sex abuse today ... at least not to that degree". "He has a vendetta against our family", Jordan told Baier. Jordan claims he had no knowledge of the doctor's alleged predations.
"If it is determined that Rep. Jordan is lying to cover up his failure to protect student wrestlers under his supervision from sexual abuses, the House must hold Rep. Jordan accountable for his lies". Geiger said he doesn't remember Strauss well.
Who Is Andrew Wheeler, Trump's New EPA Chief?
Mr Trump confirmed Mr Pruitt's resignation on Twitter, saying he had done "an outstanding job". Inhofe hailed Wheeler's ascension to EPA chief.
Jordan also said that one of his most prominent accusers, Mike DiSabato, is "out to get" Ohio State. The university has commissioned an independent investigation. Jordan, a co-founder of the conservative group, is among the high-profile House Republicans considering a run to replace Speaker Paul Ryan when he retires at the end of his term.
Gaetz isn't the only conservative suggesting a conspiracy. It's unclear whether Coleman reported the abuse to Ohio State.
"Conversations in a locker room are a lot different than allegations of abuse, or reported abuse to us", he said in an interview Friday with Fox News.
'For God's sake, Strauss's locker was right next to Jordan's and Jordan even said he'd kill him if he tried anything with him, ' Yetts said. "I support Jim Jordan".
Lawfirm Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP says it has attempted to contact Jordan on behalf of the university, but he never responded. Larkins Hall was open to faculty and other non-athletes, and many former wrestlers said they did not know the men who used the facility.
'To date, the investigative team has received confidential reports from former Ohio State varsity men student-athletes affiliated with cheerleading, fencing, football, gymnastics, ice hockey, swimming, volleyball and wrestling, ' a university official said in a statement earlier this year. "The speaker will await the findings of that inquiry".
