Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ traded to Yankees

The Yankees needed another starter and they got a pretty good facsimile of Montgomery in Happ.

In a sense, Happ is a ideal fit for a rotation that is defined by "what-if" production scenarios, especially when trying to determine who would follow ace Luis Severino in a postseason series. He's hit in 14 of 15 games, and has nine straight multi-hit games, as mentioned above. NY has good team stats across the rotation, but there are questions after No. 1 starter Luis Severino.

For all intents and purposes, Happ will step into the rotation to replace Jordan Montgomery, who was lost to Tommy John surgery earlier this season. May put a dent in those numbers, though, as Happ put up a 4.25 ERA. "We want to see what you got, so that's what I'm here for - to do what I know I can do". He should get more consistent time with the Blue Jays, and he is also controllable for the next three years, so he gives Toronto long-term depth.

"I anticipate a very similar thing for him here", Walker said Friday before the Yankees' game against the Royals was postponed by rain. Britton added $4,387,097 to the Yankees payroll. Those have been forgettable, but he batted a combined.273/.323/.453 with 29 homers, 68 doubles and three triples in just under 1,000 plate appearances with the Diamondbacks in 2016-17 and he's still just 25. NY began the season with a $179 million payroll for purposes of the luxury tax, which left the team room to add salaries and remain under the $197 million threshold. In two starts this season, he has allowed just one earned run against the Red Sox over 10 ²/₃ innings, though he lasted just 3 ²/₃ innings and gave up five unearned runs against them on July 12. With the Yankees now 5.5 back of Boston in the division, Happ should really help the them get back in the race.

Drury, who turns 26 next month, was acquired by the Yankees from Arizona in February and began the season as their starting third baseman. However, he left a game on April 6 because of blurred vision and migraines, a problem he has experienced for years.

The 23-year-old McKinney was selected by Oakland with the 24th overall pick in the 2013 amateur draft, was traded to the Chicago Cubs with Addison Russell and Dan Straily for Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammell in July 2014, then dealt to the Yankees along with Gleyber Torres and Adam Warren for Aroldis Chapman in July 2016.

McKinney has played two games for the Yankees, filling in on March 30-31 because of injuries to other outfielders.

With the acquisition of Drury and McKinney, Atkins said the Blue Jays would pivot to the hard task of trying to obtain young, controllable pitching. But he has struggled over hit past four outings, going 0-3 with a 7.41 ERA.
