What you need to know before voting in Iowa’s primary election

Voters will choose Republican or Democrat candidates to run for federal, state, county and local positions today in New Jersey's primary election.

Trump also urged Republicans to support the party's congressional candidates, in light of Democrats' increased chances of taking the House, where GOP retirements have made such a changeover more likely in the past year. Alabama, Iowa, Mississippi, New Mexico, and three other states are also having primaries.

More than 92,000 votes were cast as the race narrows to succeed Republican Gov. Susana Martinez, who can not run for a consecutive third term.

California could play a determining role in upsetting Republican control the U.S. Congress, as they hope to win 10 of the 14 seats held by Republicans.

The 39th District is one of seven California districts now held by Republicans that Hillary Clinton won in 2016.

"What's going to be the profile of these Democrats from Republican districts?" said Mark Baldassare, president of the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California.

But Democrats may have gotten too excited about these pickup opportunities for their own good. But he's a safe bet in November, and both he and his Republican challenger, Mick Rich, are running unopposed in their primaries.

- National Democrats' biggest fear is that California's primary system, in which the top two finishers advance regardless of party, will shut them out of the general election in key districts.

While Republicans would likely have a hard time winning either the governorship or a Senate seat this fall, party leaders are anxious all-Democrat ballots would depress GOP turnout, hurting more competitive down-ballot races. Dr. Asif Mahmood, a Democrat, and school teacher Nathalie Hrizi, a Peace and Freedom candidate, round out the ballot.

Antonio Villaraigosa, the former Los Angeles mayor who's now a Democratic gubernatorial candidate, called on the LA County registrar to keep the polls open longer.

In the race for governor, recent polls showed a surge by Republican businessman John Cox, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump.

In Iowa, several Democrats are competing to take on Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds this fall. That appears to be the case this year as well, as Republican Goveronor Kay Ivey seeks a full term after replacing Robert Bentley in 2017. Democrats have almost 900,000 more registered voters than Republicans in the state.

But unaffiliated voters can only cast a ballot in one primary. Kevin de Leon, D-Los Angeles, in the November runoff.

A wealthy former biopharmaceutical executive and Marine has won New Jersey's Republican Senate primary.

The admonition and the criminal corruption trial against Menendez, which ended in a mistrial before prosecutors dropped the charges, have fueled Hugin's attacks.
