More recently, the White House canceled an anticipated visit by the Philadelphia Eagles after the National Football League champions tried to reschedule and said they would "send only a tiny handful of representatives".

Trump told reporters on Friday via Sports Illustrated: "I didn't invite LeBron James, and I didn't invite Steph Curry". A new NFL policy announced last month allows dissenting players to stay in the locker room during the national anthem but Trump said "maybe they shouldn't be in the country". "But we have other teams that are coming", he said during a White House press conference, according to the New York Daily News. When the Golden State Warriors won the championship last year, he denied the invitation to go last year.

The Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers now are playing for the NBA's championship but Trump said on Friday the victor would not be coming to the White House.

"It's typical of him, I'm not surprised..."

On the eve of game three of the Warriors-Cavaliers series led 2-0 by Golden State, politics dominated the conversation in Cleveland. "We're not going to invite either team", he said. The president congratulated the team on Twitter earlier Friday. "And if I find, and my committee finds, that they're unfairly treated, then we will pardon them or at least let them out". Trump has used his presidential power seven times in less than 18 months to pardon or commute sentences for federal crimes.

Washington's hockey team won the NHL championship on Thursday night with a 4-3 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights - its first title in the team's 44-year history.

Trump pointed out that he has had several championship teams at the White House. We're going to focus on the game tonight.

"Any team that wins the championship is going to be in a decision-making situation where you have to do what is in the best interest of your team", he said.

The overwhelming issue surrounding the Eagles' planned visit was that most of the team was not going to attend, and that was a major factor in Trump deciding to pull the invitation.

Trump said he would consider pardon applications submitted by players who have participated in protests during the anthem.

Warriors star Kevin Durant and coach Steve Kerr had also made it quite clear their dislike for the president. So the photo op don't look bad.
