United US-Canada-Mexico Bid Chosen To Host 2026 FIFA World Cup

North America will host the 2026 World Cup and Philadelphia could potentially be a host city after Federation Internationale de Football Association voters overwhelmingly opted for the financial and logistical certainty of a United States-led bid over a risky Moroccan proposal for the first 48-team tournament.

The win also gives Canadian national team an automatic berth into the 2026 tournament.

Canada has never hosted the World Cup but staged the Olympic Games in 1976, the U17 World Cup in 1987, the U20 World Cup in 2007 and the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2015. United States of America will regroup in the coming years and attempt to clinch a spot in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar before turning its attention to home pursuits. Every match from the quarterfinals on will be in the USA, with the final slated for either New Jersey, Dallas, or Los Angeles.

"Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of hosting the Fifa World Cup in 2026", said an emotional Carlos Cordeiro, the president of the U.S. soccer federation, on the eve of this summer's tournament in Russia.

Mexico hosted the 1986 World Cup, while the United States was awarded the tournament in 1994 but Canada, who have appeared just once at the tournament, have never hosted. These are the cities that we think will be included as hosts for the 2026 World Cup. Leaders of the Morocco bid said they expected an African tournament to generate $5 billion in revenue.

Four current MLS stadiums (Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Gillette Stadium outside of Boston, Seattle's CenturyLink Field and BMO Field in Toronto) are in the mix for World Cup matches.

Prior to the vote, FIFA's inspections report favored the North American bid, highlighting three "high risk" elements in Morocco's bid: stadiums, hotels and transport.

Russia, the 2018 tournament host, voted for the North American bid. The country hosted in 1970, but it also hosted in 1986 after it was originally awarded to Colombia, who couldn't host for economic reasons. Pat Toomey, who was among a bipartisan group of 43 senators who urged President Trump to support the bid.

It will be the first World Cup to be expanded to 48 teams, posing an enormous logistical challenge for the hosts, one of the issues that is thought to have undermined the Moroccan bid.

Europe went 41-12 for the joint America bid with Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Serbia and Turkey among those that sided with Morocco.

The Nashville Convention and Visitors Corporation will hold a press conference at 9:30 Wednesday morning to discuss the 2026 World Cup.

Success for the US-led bid was based on the promise of an $11 billion windfall for the global game with 17 stadiums already ready for the biggest single sports event in the world.

Vancouver will watch from the sidelines after the B.C. government, citing concerns over the possible costs of being a host city, was unable to come to terms with the bid committee.
