Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, said she was asked to leave a Virginia restaurant Friday night because of her work in the Trump administration, becoming the latest official to be singled out for her support of the president's policies.

The owner of the restaurant that booted Sanders out has defended her actions, and made it clear that despite the backlash, she would do it again.

The press secretary's tweet about her treatment created a social media firestorm that is still going on at this hour - there are more than 24,000 retweets of her original message.

Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and father of Sanders, labelled the eatery's move as "bigotry".

The official says that the owner of the Red Hen in Lexington, Virginia had asked her to leave because staff were uncomfortable serving Trump officials. "I said, 'I'd like to ask you to leave'". "And appetizers are 'small plates for small minds, '" he posted Saturday. Earlier this week, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was heckled at a Mexican restaurant, White House adviser Stephen Miller was heckled at a different Mexican restaurant and Politico just released a new feature about how young Trump staffers can't find dates because they work for, well, Trump.

"I said, 'I'm the owner [and] I'd like you to come out to the patio with me for a word", Ms Wilkinson recalled.

Given her own moral position that the spokeswoman serves in an "inhumane and unethical" administration, Wilkinson told The Washington Post, she could not accept a defender of the president's "cruelest policies".

Sanders and her party left, and weren't charged for a cheese course they had already consumed.

"I'm not a huge fan of confrontation,"Wilkinson, who then went to the restaurant, said".

The Red Hen has an overall Yelp rating of 3.5 stars from 10,272 reviews at the time of publishing.

Employees at the restaurant told The Associated Press that Wilkinson wasn't available for further comment.

"Terrible ownership and management: bigoted and prejudiced", wrote another reviewer.

She said Ms Sanders replied with: "That's fine".

The restaurant's owner, Stephanie Wilkinson, explained to the Washington Post that the chef called her and asked what to do because Huckabee Sanders was dining on a cheese plate in the farm-to-table restaurant.
