President Trump bashes Harley-Davidson over production move, tweets 'We won't forget'

Once the news was out, President Trump rushed to Twitter to make his feelings known.

The company says it's doing so because of tariffs it's facing in a trade dispute between the US and the European Union. "Harley must know that they won't be able to sell back into USA without paying a big tax!"

Taxes that the European Union has slapped on its bikes in reaction to Trump's steel and aluminum levies will cost the company as much as US$100 million (RM402 million) a year. "Hence, they were just using Tariffs/Trade War as an excuse", he said.

But Harley-Davidson's plight in Europe drew fresh interest from French Parliament member Eric Straumann, who contacted Levatich to propose a new factory on the French-German border in Alsace.

Harley-Davidson, as we know, now builds bikes in Australia, Brazil, India, and Thailand.

The problem with Trump's tweet is that, while Harley makes a majority of its motorcycles at several locations in the United States, it's had several overseas manufacturing sites for years.

Harley already has assembly plants in India and Brazil. "Harley must know that they won't be able to sell back into US without paying a big tax!"

The duo, who began dating back in 2012, broke the news of their engagement by placing an announcement in The Times newspaper. Thankfully that wasn't the case at the wedding of Kit Harington and Rose Leslie in Aberdeenshire, Scotland this morning.

Trump has also used Harley-Davidson as an example of a company that would benefit from his policies.

Harley-Davidson executives met with President Trump at the White House previous year after President Trump canceled a visit to the company's headquarters in Milwaukee because protests had been planned.

"I've done so much for you, and then this", Trump wrote.

"We don't want to punish, but that is the unfortunate effect, that (US companies) will put pressure on the American administration to say hey, hold on a minute, this is not good for the American economy", EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said on Tuesday.

Trump added that the administration is finishing a study on imposing tariffs on cars from the EU. "As a rider and owner of a Harley-Davidson and as a former Harley-Davidson dealer, I condemn this decision and I strongly urge them to reconsider it".

Surprised that Harley-Davidson, of all companies, would be the first to wave the White Flag. "These global facilities exist to support more competitive pricing by eliminating much of the tax and tariff burden imposed on fully assembled Harley-Davidson motorcycles imported into key worldwide markets". If they move, watch it, it will be the beginning of the end.
