UEFA says Milorad Mazic of Serbia will referee the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid on May 26 in Kiev, Ukraine.

Milorad Mazic's last game in this season's Champions league was Juventus-Barcelona group stage game in November.

Ronaldo threw a strop at Mazic as Portugal fell to a 4-0 defeat by Germany in 2014 - a game which saw former Real defender Pepe sent off, after Mario Gotze had been awarded a soft penalty for an apparent foul by Joao Pereira.

"With all respect, I would like to have the opportunity to have a one-on-one conversation with him".

He was in charge of last year's FIFA Confederations Cup final between Chile and Germany, and also officiated at the 2016 UEFA Super Cup.

Both Liverpool and Real Madrid progressed to the Champions League final after aggregate victories over Roma and Bayern Munich.

A website called redcardtheref.com conducted a poll after the 2014 World Cup, asking the public to vote for the worst referee of the tournament.

Dutchman Bjorn Kuipers will referee the Europa League final between Olympique de Marseille and Atletico Madrid, which will be played on May 16 in Lyon, France.

These figures aside, perhaps the backlash of appointing Mazic to officiate the Champions League final this month is slightly unfair.
