After coming in third the past two years, Ocean Springs High School has finally climbed the hurdle and been named the best high school in MS in the U.S. News & World Report annual rankings of all U.S. high schools, released Wednesday. Total minority enrollment at the school was 12 percent.
Next, each school's reading and mathematics assessment scores are compared among their historically underserved students - black, Hispanic and low-income - with the average statewide results for those subgroups. Nationally, out of 20,000 public high schools evaluated by U.S. News, it ranked 1,495th. The AP® participation rate at Ridgefield High School is 70 percent.
Gold and silver medals are awarded to schools that are most successfully preparing students for college, based on students who pass Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate tests.
Contributing to the achievement was a 97 percent graduation rate and an eight-to-one student-teacher ratio, according to the magazine's announcement on Wednesday.
The first step determines "whether each school's students were performing better than statistically expected for students in the state".
