Justify, the chestnut son of Scat Daddy out of the Ghostzapper mare Stage Magic, became the first horse to win the Derby without being raced as a 2-year-old since Apollo in 1882.
Justify was tested by Kentucky Derby runner-up Good Magic for most of the race.
Those possibilities inspired trainer Chad Brown to give Good Magic another chance after he ran a solid second in the Derby and for D. Wayne Lukas to believe Bravazo, after a troubled sixth in Louisville, could possibly serve as a spoiler in a smaller field.
And considering the dense, eerie fog at Pimlico, it's fair to wonder how many people at the track had clear sight of this fantastic finish?

Reports say that the police report remained confidential until October, when the informant sent the email to DelTondo's school. When asked, DelTonto said that she was "just talking" to her former student, who was "upset and needed someone to talk to".
Having the Preakness favorite has never bothered Bob Baffert before and it doesn't bother him with Justify. Justify, who paid $2.80, $2.80 and $2.60 as the deserved favorite and improved to 5-0, showed more evidence of being the same kind of super horse as American Pharoah, and Baffert has repeatedly drawn comparisons between them.
Demling followed up last year's Kentucky Derby win by successfully calling Cloud Computing as one of his long shots with a chance to win the Preakness. "But I just feel with this horse, he's so talented that something could go wrong and he'll still win".
The chestnut colt, the victor of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, would become the 13th horse to claim a Triple Crown with a victory in the 1-1/2 mile (12-furlong) Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.
Coverage of the Preakness was set to begin Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Baffert also remained undefeated with Derby winners in the Preakness following Silver Charm, Real Quiet, War Emblem and American Pharoah. American Pharoah, also trained by Baffert, is the last horse to accomplish the feat, in 2015. It was like they had their own private match race (but I'm) so happy we got it done.
"We're going to make sure that he comes out of the race well and he trains well for it", Baffert said. With Baffert praying for the wire at Pimlico, Justify won by a half-length after completing the race in 1:55.93.
Weather forecasters are calling for rain much of the day. He won the Tampa Bay Derby in March and has three wins in five career races.
