Wisconsin Helicopter Crash Kills Three

The crew had just delivered a patient to a Madison hospital and was headed back to its base, according to National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Peter C. Knudson. The company says air and ground ambulance service will be suspended until the company determines when it's appropriate to resume operations.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Department is investigating the crash of an air ambulance helicopter Thursday night in Hazelhurst.

Knutson said a NTSB investigator was driving up from Chicago and was expected to be on the scene Friday afternoon, along with a Federal Aviation Administration team.

The last known contact with the pilot was at 10:55 p.m. Oneida County dispatch received a 911 call about 11:22 p.m. Hess said deputies located the crash site roughly 1 a.m. Friday morning. Ascension Health operates its own ground medical transportation in the region.

"We are deeply saddened and mourning the loss of three teammates who were aboard the air medical helicopter that went down in Hazelhurst, Wisconsin on April 26", the statement reads. The exact number of persons aboard the helicopter at the time of the disaster, it turns out. The three are believed to have died on impact, according to the medical examiner.

The Associated Press reports at least eight agencies were involved in the search. No further information is available at this time.
