Trump poked fun at his son-in-law who was seated to his left, commenting: "You know, we were late tonight because Jared could not get through security".

President Donald Trump on Saturday night traded humorous jabs with a cabal of lawmakers, administration officials, media figures and military officers at the annual Gridiron Dinner in Washington.

Speaking at Saturday's Gridiron Dinner, an annual closed-door meeting of high-profile journalists and Washington D.C. power players, Trump addressed the ongoing exodus of staff members from his deeply cooked inner sanctum. "Ivanka, you've got to do something".

According to Mother Jones Washington bureau chief David Corn, Trump "humiliated" his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, who accompanied him to the event.

Ignoring numerous self-deprecating remarks about his administration, they seem particularly hysterical about Trump's joke that Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA) should take an IQ test.

When it came to impeachment, he framed it around a mini-roasting of Vice President Mike Pence: "Mike is doing a fantastic job as Vice President".

"You can't be impeached when there's no crime!" "Put that down!" Trump remarked.

Trump remarked on the tension between himself and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. "But you love me right, honey?". He also observed, "No matter how many times we say it, we don't drain the swamps either". Pence's office said it believed the abrupt cancellation was a sign that USA attempts to exert pressure on the regime were working.

"Maybe positive things are happening", Trump said. "And I just don't understand why everyone on the internet and in the media keeps screaming, 'Hashtag Free Melania.' She's actually having a great time".

The event featured journalists in costumes satirizing USA politics and the White House culture in raucous skits, songs and speeches.

He took aim at his favourite target - media - "Fake News CNN".

"I have great respect for the various branches of government, the executive, the legislative, the judicial - very important - and last, Fox News".

"Nancy's worth tens of millions of dollars and she's a populist". He said he liked turnover and chaos because it was "exciting and invigorating" and brought in new thought.

"My staff was concerned that I couldn't do self-deprecating humor, and I told them not to worry, nobody does self deprecating humor better than me", Trump said. Besides joking about Pence and Kushner, Trump also slipped in a joke about the rumored state of his marriage in a departure from his usually more serious tone. He later referenced the #FreeMelania hashtag.

She said she expected him to say "racist remarks about me" and added, "I'm told he wasn't amusing at all".

The speech came at the end of a tumultuous week in the White House, which included the much-publicized exit of communications director Hope Hicks.

"But we were talking about the Dreamers and quite honestly, Democrats can fantasize all they want about winning in 2020. those are the dreamers".

"I won't rule out direct talks with Kim Jong Un, I just won't".

While the speech was light on policy announcements and strong on humor, as per tradition, Trump did suggest that the United States planned to meet with North Korea providing they "denuke".
