The Adams County Sheriff's Office said an officer died in a shooting in the area of 88th and Dawson Street Wednesday night.

Two other suspects were still being sought, and law enforcement said they were considered armed and risky.

The sheriff's office says Gumm was shot after deputies were called to an "assault in progress" and saw one of the suspects run behind a house.

The foundation identified the deputy as 32-year-old Heath Gumm, but the Adams County Sheriff's Office would not confirm the deputy's identity to Denver7.

Gumm was taken to Denver Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The flags will be lowered until sunset on the day of the funeral for Gumm, who had been with the sheriff's office since 2013.

A large perimeter has been set up Wednesday to search for the suspect.

Citing the needs of an ongoing investigation, police advised local residents to exercise caution and take precautionary measures such as staying away from windows or avoiding certain parts of the city. "This not a time where people should be shooting police officers", Kapaun said. "Please continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers as this is a very hard time for everyone", the sheriff's office said in a statement.

The shooting happened in Adams County, about an hour east of Denver.

Investigators say they are still searching for two additional suspects described as light skinned black males or dark skinned Hispanic males dressed in all black.
