The Shape of Water leads Oscar nods with 13; Franco, Hanks snubbed

I suspect they will be cancelling each other out, but Nolan's war movie could be a dark horse for Best Picture.

Asked if he's ever got a bout of nerves when meeting an acting peer at the Oscars, he said: "My Lord, yes".

This year has been one of the most controversial oscar nominations of all time as there are a lot of movements going on in Hollywood including equal pay for women and cases of sexual misconduct. ("Billboards" is nominated for best original screenplay.) "The Shape of Water" appears to be the film to watch and the leading contender.

Rachel Morrison, the director of photography on "Mudbound", is the first woman to receive a nomination for cinematography.

However, the superhero film Wonder Woman, a box office hit, and its director Patty Jenkins were snubbed.

Q: Do you believe that James Franco was not nominated for best actor because of the recent allegations against him for sexual harassment? The consistency of wins by particular directors, films and stars at the Golden Globe Awards, the Critic's Choice Awards, and the Screen Actor's Guild Awards all seem to indicate that a few of the biggest prizes of the night are all but sown up.

India beat Bangladesh to set up semifinal with Pakistan
For Bangladesh , Pinak Ghosh made 43 but no other batsmen even managed to cross 18 as the chase kept struggling for momentum. India defeated another three-time Under 19 World Cup victor Australia by 100 runs in their first match of the tournament.

What's important about these instances, and why Gary Oldman's take on Winston Churchill in "Darkest Hour" will be yet another, is that it's not the make-up and costuming or physical adjustment that make the difference. This year also saw a number of black actors nominated. It's also hard for comedic performances to get nominated.

The nominations for the 90th Academy Awards were released early on January 23, and so the field is set for critics, pundits, and anyone else who follows awards season to make their predictions. Regardless of one's response to that particular plot, the Academy was clearly more at ease nominating a film in which a cisgender straight man disrupts the lives of a family headed by two moms than it was rewarding the artistry of Carol, in which men were beside the point and plot.

Actresses Saiorse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf were also recognized for Lady Bird. Besides Gerwig's directing nod, Jordan Peele's nomination in the same category for the critically-lauded "Get Out" means he is only the fifth African-American ever nominated for a directing Oscar. (Paul Thomas Anderson is the only returning nominee.) Or that Tom Hanks - Tom Hanks - was left off the Best Actor list, possibly in favor of Daniel Kaluuya's incredible turn in the sharp, satirical horror movie, Get Out?

And what is Denzel Washington's Roman J. Israel, Esq. doing in the same category?

Now, I'm an old man, but I'm not that old. She has won the Academy Award thrice. But Moonlight aside, Oscar voters have generally done better with honoring stories about queer men than women throughout its history, although the men don't always get their happy endings either.

In the 90 years Hollywood has seen fit to celebrate itself - first in private, then for the world to see - the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been a notoriously conservative bunch. I'm curious if other actors will do that this year.
