Day after Mumbai pub blaze, BMC smashes illegal structures

There were around 50 people in "One Above" restaurant when the fire broke out.

Police said they were in the process of issuing lookout notices against the other accused. Referring to Saturday's crackdown on illegal structures at restaurants, Nirupam said, "This means the BMC knew the illegal structures and still kept quiet for so long".

He said BMC teams will continue with their work of razing illegal structures and a detailed report will be compiled by the evening. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is also carrying out a demolition drive against unauthorised constructions.

The fire in a Mumbai pub that claimed 14 lives has raised concerns of safety at thousands of eateries and restaurants in the national capital as just 400 of them have an NOC from the Delhi Fire Service.

The actor-turned-politician said the accident took place due to negligence of authorities and wondered how could they ignore safety standards before giving permission to run such pubs.

Germany's Social Democratic Party board approves Merkel coalition deal
If the SPD delegates give the thumbs up, formal coalition talks could in theory begin as soon as January 22. In reality, the next "grand coalition" wouldn't be up and running before the beginning of April.

The BMC yesterday suspended five officials, including those attached to the G- South ward for dereliction of duty.

"Just like in the nallah and road fix scam, where we found out who is the corrupt contractor, and who is the corrupt engineer and broke their backs, we will do the same here", Mehta said. "We are probing if the flames during a fire stunt by a bartender at the pub came in contact with plastic sheets that covered the bamboo structure (propping the makeshift canopy) and triggered the blaze", he said.

City BJP chief Ashish Shelar demanded an inquiry into the fire safety measures at buildings in the Kamala Mills Compound.

He said, if a flagrant violation of safety norms is found, civic officials can also "seal the facilities or seize the licence, as the case maybe". The massive fire had broken out from a rooftop restaurant and later spread to the entire area, on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.

Speaking on the issue, the Additional Municipal Commissioner of BMC said, "Investigation is underway, we are taking strict action against those who violated the rules". Heart goes out to bereaved families.
